New working group endorsed

We are pleased to learn that the Research Data Alliance (RDA) has fully endorsed a new working group on the topic “Harmonised terminologies and schemas for FAIR data in materials science and related domains“. This endorsement follows after the proposal was open to community review and feedback earlier in the year.

The working group will formally kick off at the upcoming, fully virtual, 22nd Plenary Meeting of the RDA, which promises a very full and busy programme of events.

The group will offer two specific sessions so that every global region can easily participate. Session one will take place on Wednesday 15 May 2024, 07:00–08:30 UTC, and session two will take place on Thursday 23 May 2024, 14:00–15:30 UTC.

The draft agenda for the sessions is now available with opportunities for all participants to hear talks and provide input on a wide range of topics and interests.

On 30 April at 1–2 pm (BST), Gerhard will be presenting this month’s webinar hosted by Materials Square.

The presentation, entitled “How is materials modeling working for the industry?”, will discuss the role of and challenges for materials modeling in supporting the industry in its quest to respond to complex challenges, such as increased sustainability and digitalization.

Although materials modeling combines well with powerful data-driven techniques, its full potential is not always understood throughout organisations. So, the focus will be on market trends and the need for integration of materials modeling in digitalisation initiatives.

OntoTrans M48 consortium meeting in Freiburg, Germany

The OntoTrans consortium M48 meeting is underway in Freiburg, Germany in which GCL is a partner organisation. The meeting will run 19–20 March 2024.

Fraunhofer IWM, a partner organisation in the project, is our venue for this hybrid event with all project partners coming together to discuss the great progress made during the project and to finalise plans as the project enters its last months.

The OntoTrans project work to provide an ontology-based 0pen translation environment to benefit existing and emerging developments in materials research and manufacturing.

Harmonising materials modelling and characterisation

Outcomes from two current EU-funded projects that Goldbeck Consulting are involved in — NanoMECommons and OntoTrans — have been presented and discussed with attendees as part of a joint NMBP-35 workshop in Madrid.

The NMBP-35 workshop, combined under the umbrella of the European Materials Characterisation Council (EMCC) and European Materials Modelling Council (EMMC), formed part of a broader, 3-day meeting that incorporated a general assembly and a project review meeting for NanoMECommons.

There was significant interest from the community in improved data and knowledge management, harmonising materials modelling and characterisation.

With numerous projects, both old and new, actively using the characterisation data standard for materials, CHADA, and the template for the standardised description of materials modelling, MODA, we look forward to continued strong collaborations in the context of EMCC and EMMC.

Supported by the NanoMECommons project, we will work together to shape a new CEN Workshop Agreement for updating CHADA and MODA based on recent ontology developments.

 

Working Group consultation now open

Goldbeck Consulting is involved in proposing a new working group within the Research Data Alliance (RDA). The proposed topic is “Harmonised terminologies and schemas for FAIR data in materials science and related domains”.

The proposal is currently under community review, and feedback and comments are encouraged. Detailed information about the group, including its objectives and work plan, is available here.

OntoCommons: An industrial ontology journey of Standardisation, FAIR Data & Innovation

In this first webinar of the OntoCommons project we will provide a brief overview about the OntoCommons EcoSystem (OCES), Top Reference Ontologies, Industrial Domain Ontologies, FAIR Ontologies, Standardisation in the ontology ecosystem, the OntoCommons Community and the Focus Areas of the OntoCommons project.

The webinar will be held on 23 February 2021 at 2pm GMT (15:00 CET).

Ontologists, industrial stakeholders, implementers, and end users should participate to learn more about:

Nominee for Standards + Innovation Project Award

Together with partners in the OYSTER project, Goldbeck Consulting is involved in an effort to standardise terminology, classification and documentation of materials characterisation by means of a CEN Workshop Agreement. We are pleased to announce that this initiative has been nominated for a CEN Standards + Innovation Project Award 2020.

A standardised terminology will improve communication and interoperability in the entire area of materials characterisation and reduce the barrier to utilising advanced materials characterisation in industry. The standardisation developments will support efficient solutions for materials characterisation, enhance the communication, dissemination, storage, retrieval and mining of data about materials characterisation and contribute to efforts for materials digitalisation.

The effort is carried out in the context of the project OYSTER which makes use of recent advances in experiments and modelling of nano-scale contact mechanics to develop an Open Innovation Environment (OIE) that will boost dramatically the development of nano-patterned, nano-engineered or chemically modified devices with controlled surface free energy and adhesive properties. To achieve such goals, OYSTER has been developing novel formats for materials characterisation data (called “CHADA”), which will be combined with innovative ontologies and data management plans to attempt the establishment of unified standards for the digital representation of materials characterisation experiments.

The CEN Workshop Agreement also builds on a related CWA on Materials Modelling Terminology, Classification and Metadata, CWA 17284, which was led by Goldbeck Consulting.

Task Group on Materials Ontologies

A new international Task Group on Materials Ontologies was launched at the Research Data Alliance’s 13th Plenary Meeting in Philadelphia on 4th April 2019. The Task Group is part of the remit of the RDA/CODATA Interest Group on Materials Data. It recognises the growing importance of ontologies in the Materials Science domain for delivering on the objectives and opportunities connected with digitalisation and “Materials 4.0”, in particular interoperability, information transparency, decision support based on data plus models and artificial intelligence.

There is an impressive and growing body of work on materials ontologies, in particular concerning database integration. with recent applications including a metallic materials ontology derived from the semantic knowledge base YAGO and a catalyst materials ontology including an integration of a database of computational data and one consisting of experimental data. Furthermore, the European Materials Modelling Council has been spearheading the development of a general materials science ontology framework, the European Materials & Modelling Ontology EMMO. Furthermore, there is a rich body of work related to chemicals and nanoparticles and nanomaterials safety, as well as analytical chemistry/characterisation.

The scope of the Task Group includes any type of materials/substance in any state at any scale and any ontology about materials or directly linked to materials, e.g. characterisation, modelling, processing, safety etc.

The Task Group initial topics and objectives include:

  • Creating awareness of pertinent RDA recommendations and reports concerning ontologies.
  • Networking of groups around the world with an interest in Materials Ontologies and mapping the field.
  • Making materials ontologies FAIR.
  • Collecting use cases and requirements.
  • Developing recommendations on governance of materials ontologies.
  • Discussion on upper level ontologies in the context of materials science needs.
  • Interoperability of materials ontologies and interfacing with ontology developments in adjacent fields such a manufacturing.
  • Ontology Alignment.

Communication about the Task Group will be carried out via the RDA/CODATA IG on Materials Data (so please join!).

In a session of the EU Industry Days 2019 the question of how to increase European capacity to extract knowledge from materials and manufacturing data was discussed.

Delivering on the opportunities of Materials and Manufacturing within Industry 4.0 requires adding meaning to data (semantics), enabling interoperability and linking up silos. The huge benefits of structured data, common knowledge frameworks and interoperability were demonstrated and the importance of supporting uptake of such digital technologies in industry was emphasised. Benefits include higher efficiency of materials use, improved manufacturing value chain interactions and new business model opportunities. Current lack of semantics and interoperability are key barriers to accessing the value hidden in raw data (estimated to be 36 billion Euros) and to improved decision making. Ontologies are a core element of a set of solutions proposed by the panel and endorsed by audience contributions. All stakeholders are encouraged to collaborate and create a harmonised semantic knowledge framework open to everyone. Investments in a workforce trained in digital skills including semantic technologies is needed. The importance of overcoming ‘non-technical’ challenges such as legal, regulatory, security, data-sovereignty was highlighted. Building a system of trust and rewards for data sharing is required. Such a system, together with widely agreed ontology would enable Digital Marketplaces as an efficient way of realising Industry Commons. An audience poll showed a big gap between the need for and current capability in data interoperability and semantic technologies.  It confirms the need for action in this important field underpinning successful digitalisation of materials and manufacturing. Strong interest was expressed in working across domains in an alliance for digital materials and manufacturing.

Towards a Digital Materials Alliance for European industry

Goldbeck Consulting is pleased to organise a session at the the EU Industry Days, 5/6 February 2019, the flagship EU event on industrial policy. The conference will include various sessions organised by different Commission departments and industrial stakeholders. High profile industry speakers will attend the event with the purpose of influencing and inspiring future industry leaders, and prompting discussion and debate amongst different audience categories.

The session on Digital Materials will take place on 6 February and discuss a range of questions including

  • How to increase European manufacturing and process industry capacity to extract knowledge from data?
  • How to support leadership by digital transformation of data into knowledge?
  • What actions are proposed for a common semantic knowledge base in materials?
  • How can efforts to build ontologies in various domains of materials and manufacturing be combined for best effect?
  • How to achieve that manufacturing companies remain competitive (new products, high-added value) on the basis of knowledge extracted from wide-spanning data sets?
  • How to promote European benefits from data management, standardised documentation enabling interoperability and linking tools for enriching and enhancing the usability of data?
