CEN Workshop and review
/in Characterisation, Materials Modelling, Materials science, Metadata, NanoMECommons, Standardization /by Vikki CantrillThis morning, Gerhard chaired a CEN Workshop as part of its kick-off meeting.
The workshop focused on the revision of CWA 17815:2021, entitled “Materials characterisation – Terminology, metadata and classification”. This work is based on insights from the NanoMECommons project that we are taking part in.
The CEN workshop aims to establish a common language (definitions and vocabulary) for materials characterisation and modelling. It aims to update a previous CEN Workshop Agreement on the same topic. Our work on the Characterisation Methodology Ontology (CHAMEO) will underpin the updates to provide a machine-readable reference for the characterisation terminology and metadata, and a clearer structure to the items that are required for documentation of characterisation experiments and the related data processing. The documentation of materials modelling, which was the topic of another CWA, were also discussed.
CEN, the European Committee for Standardization, is an association that brings together the national standardization bodies across 34 European countries. It provides a platform for the development of European Standards and other technical documents in relation to various kinds of products, materials, services and processes.
Heading to Materials Week 2024
/in EMMC, Events, Materials Modelling, Ontology, OntoTrans /by Vikki CantrillWill you be attending Materials Week 2024 17–21 June 2024 in Limassol, Cyprus? If so, then do come along to meet Gerhard and learn more about the work that we do.
Gerhard will be representing several of the projects that Goldbeck Consulting Limited is currently work with. He will be giving two talks about our work on the OntoTrans and OpenModel projects. He will also be presenting two posters that cover our work on the NanoMECommons project and his work and role as part of the European Materials Modelling Council (EMMC).
For the OntoTrans project, the talk is entitled: Tackling Innovation Challenges in an Industry 5.0 Context with an Ontology-based Open Translation Environment.
For the OpenModel project, the talk is entitled: An Open-Innovation Platform for Knowledge-based Management of Materials Modelling Workflows for Industrial Data.
For the NanoMECommons project, the poster is entitled: From CHADA to CHAMEO: A Reference System for Characterisation Data Management.
For the EMMC, the poster is entitled: EMMC: Communities and governance of models and digital representations of materials.
If you are interested in attending this event, you can register here.
New working group endorsed
/in Interoperability, Materials science, Metadata, Ontology, Standardization /by Vikki CantrillWe are pleased to learn that the Research Data Alliance (RDA) has fully endorsed a new working group on the topic “Harmonised terminologies and schemas for FAIR data in materials science and related domains“. This endorsement follows after the proposal was open to community review and feedback earlier in the year.
The working group will formally kick off at the upcoming, fully virtual, 22nd Plenary Meeting of the RDA, which promises a very full and busy programme of events.
The group will offer two specific sessions so that every global region can easily participate. Session one will take place on Wednesday 15 May 2024, 07:00–08:30 UTC, and session two will take place on Thursday 23 May 2024, 14:00–15:30 UTC.
The draft agenda for the sessions is now available with opportunities for all participants to hear talks and provide input on a wide range of topics and interests.

Semantic Materials Workshop report 2024
/in EMMO, Events, Materials Modelling, Metadata, Ontology, OntoTrans, Science to business /by Vikki CantrillSemantic Materials Workshop Report
Semantic data and knowledge management for chemicals and materials industries
A partnership meeting organised by the OntoTrans project
Following the success of the inaugural Semantic Materials Workshop meeting that took place at the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining (IOM3) on 17 April 2024, a short report on the findings from the day has been published. The report covers the need for efficient data management and exchange within materials science, the barriers and benefits of adopting semantic technologies, and directions for the future.
Developing Ontologies in Materials Science
was written by Vikki Cantrill, Anne de Baas, Otello Roscioni, and Gerhard Goldbeck.
