Sharing knowledge at the Knowledge Graph Alliance summit

Today, Gerhard Goldbeck presented at the Knowledge Graph Alliance’s (KGA) 1st KG-AI summit at Cranfield University, UK.

Attendees at the summit had the opportunity to listen to speakers and experts in semantics and knowledge graph technology. The workshop aimed to foster innovation, share cutting-edge research, and explore practical applications.

Overall, the KGA supports efforts with semantic knowledge graphs by research organizations, universities, and standardization bodies to facilitate standardization and industry-standard guidance.

Today, on behalf of the European Materials Modelling Council (EMMC), Gerhard presented the European Materials Modelling Ontology (EMMO) conceptualisation framework as a science-based, pluralistic conceptualisation environment to support knowledge capture and better integrate human and machine ‘intelligence’.

Semantic data and knowledge management for chemicals and materials industries

A partnership meeting organised by the OntoTrans project

 

The inaugural Semantic Materials Workshop meeting took place at the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining (IOM3) on 17 April 2024, organised in conjunction with the partners from the OntoTrans project.

The IOM3 provided a great, yet quirky, venue for our full day of presentations and discussions ranging from industrial requirements to implementations of semantic data management systems.

We were joined by industrial delegates from Johnson Matthey, Michelin, P&G and BASF; ontology developments and applications in materials from Univ Bologna, SINTEF and Fraunhofer ISC; and solutions from SciBite, Semantic Partners and metaphacts, alongside many others.

OntoTrans partners discussed their ideas to offer consulting services based on Elementary Multiperspective Material Ontology (EMMO) ontologies and proposed a collaborative, industrial consortium to help usher in the era of “active metadata”.

We are delighted to announce our Semantic Materials Workshop.

The success of digital transformation projects towards semantic data management requires a range of skills and partners all working together. At this expert meeting, partners from the OntoTrans project would like to discuss potential collaborations with a wide range of solution providers and interested parties from chemical and materials industries.

This workshop will include a full day of presentations and discussions ranging from industrial requirements to implementations of semantic data management systems.

Attendees will hear about industrial challenges and directions from Johnson Matthey, Michelin and BASF; ontology developments and applications in materials, including batteries from Univ Bologna, SINTEF and Fraunhofer ISC; and solutions from SciBite, Semantic Partners and metaphacts.

OntoTrans partners plan to offer consulting services to build and implement Elementary Multiperspective Material Ontology (EMMO)-based ontologies that enable materials- and chemistry-based industries to reap the benefits of semantic knowledge management at the enterprise level and enter the era of “active metadata”.

Why use semantic data management?

Data management has evolved considerably over the last 30 years. Semantics and semantic technologies enable us to carry out unified analyses of data from different data sources and offer augmented analyses, recommendations and AI orchestration.

Knowledge management systems reflect and maintain enterprise knowledge that can be integrated with knowledge and data beyond the enterprise, which supports open and co-innovation.

Ontologies are used successfully in finance (FIBO ontology), oil and gas production (ISO15926), and bioinformatics (Gene ontology), along with chemistry domain ontologies. However, semantics in the area of materials science and manufacturing is underexploited.

A number of EU projects have contributed to an ontology framework that incorporates fundamental principles and concepts from physics, chemistry and materials science: the EMMO.

The OntoTrans project has built a semantic knowledge system based on EMMO that enables users to represent innovation challenges and connect them to a range of data sources, including data from modelling and simulation.

Working Group consultation now open

Goldbeck Consulting is involved in proposing a new working group within the Research Data Alliance (RDA). The proposed topic is “Harmonised terminologies and schemas for FAIR data in materials science and related domains”.

The proposal is currently under community review, and feedback and comments are encouraged. Detailed information about the group, including its objectives and work plan, is available here.

Nominee for Standards + Innovation Project Award

Together with partners in the OYSTER project, Goldbeck Consulting is involved in an effort to standardise terminology, classification and documentation of materials characterisation by means of a CEN Workshop Agreement. We are pleased to announce that this initiative has been nominated for a CEN Standards + Innovation Project Award 2020.

A standardised terminology will improve communication and interoperability in the entire area of materials characterisation and reduce the barrier to utilising advanced materials characterisation in industry. The standardisation developments will support efficient solutions for materials characterisation, enhance the communication, dissemination, storage, retrieval and mining of data about materials characterisation and contribute to efforts for materials digitalisation.

The effort is carried out in the context of the project OYSTER which makes use of recent advances in experiments and modelling of nano-scale contact mechanics to develop an Open Innovation Environment (OIE) that will boost dramatically the development of nano-patterned, nano-engineered or chemically modified devices with controlled surface free energy and adhesive properties. To achieve such goals, OYSTER has been developing novel formats for materials characterisation data (called “CHADA”), which will be combined with innovative ontologies and data management plans to attempt the establishment of unified standards for the digital representation of materials characterisation experiments.

The CEN Workshop Agreement also builds on a related CWA on Materials Modelling Terminology, Classification and Metadata, CWA 17284, which was led by Goldbeck Consulting.

Task Group on Materials Ontologies

A new international Task Group on Materials Ontologies was launched at the Research Data Alliance’s 13th Plenary Meeting in Philadelphia on 4th April 2019. The Task Group is part of the remit of the RDA/CODATA Interest Group on Materials Data. It recognises the growing importance of ontologies in the Materials Science domain for delivering on the objectives and opportunities connected with digitalisation and “Materials 4.0”, in particular interoperability, information transparency, decision support based on data plus models and artificial intelligence.

There is an impressive and growing body of work on materials ontologies, in particular concerning database integration. with recent applications including a metallic materials ontology derived from the semantic knowledge base YAGO and a catalyst materials ontology including an integration of a database of computational data and one consisting of experimental data. Furthermore, the European Materials Modelling Council has been spearheading the development of a general materials science ontology framework, the European Materials & Modelling Ontology EMMO. Furthermore, there is a rich body of work related to chemicals and nanoparticles and nanomaterials safety, as well as analytical chemistry/characterisation.

The scope of the Task Group includes any type of materials/substance in any state at any scale and any ontology about materials or directly linked to materials, e.g. characterisation, modelling, processing, safety etc.

The Task Group initial topics and objectives include:

  • Creating awareness of pertinent RDA recommendations and reports concerning ontologies.
  • Networking of groups around the world with an interest in Materials Ontologies and mapping the field.
  • Making materials ontologies FAIR.
  • Collecting use cases and requirements.
  • Developing recommendations on governance of materials ontologies.
  • Discussion on upper level ontologies in the context of materials science needs.
  • Interoperability of materials ontologies and interfacing with ontology developments in adjacent fields such a manufacturing.
  • Ontology Alignment.

Communication about the Task Group will be carried out via the RDA/CODATA IG on Materials Data (so please join!).

Data in Materials and Manufacturing

In a session of the EU Industry Days 2019 the question of how to increase European capacity to extract knowledge from materials and manufacturing data was discussed.

Delivering on the opportunities of Materials and Manufacturing within Industry 4.0 requires adding meaning to data (semantics), enabling interoperability and linking up silos. The huge benefits of structured data, common knowledge frameworks and interoperability were demonstrated and the importance of supporting uptake of such digital technologies in industry was emphasised. Benefits include higher efficiency of materials use, improved manufacturing value chain interactions and new business model opportunities. Current lack of semantics and interoperability are key barriers to accessing the value hidden in raw data (estimated to be 36 billion Euros) and to improved decision making. Ontologies are a core element of a set of solutions proposed by the panel and endorsed by audience contributions. All stakeholders are encouraged to collaborate and create a harmonised semantic knowledge framework open to everyone. Investments in a workforce trained in digital skills including semantic technologies is needed. The importance of overcoming ‘non-technical’ challenges such as legal, regulatory, security, data-sovereignty was highlighted. Building a system of trust and rewards for data sharing is required. Such a system, together with widely agreed ontology would enable Digital Marketplaces as an efficient way of realising Industry Commons. An audience poll showed a big gap between the need for and current capability in data interoperability and semantic technologies.  It confirms the need for action in this important field underpinning successful digitalisation of materials and manufacturing. Strong interest was expressed in working across domains in an alliance for digital materials and manufacturing.

Open characterisation and modelling environment

Goldbeck Consulting is pleased to be a partner in the EU H2020 project OYSTER, supporting the development of an “Open characterisation and modelling environment to drive innovation in advanced nano-architectured and bio-inspired hard/soft interfaces”.  OYSTER brings together leading European laboratories and industrial partners to take existing nanoscale characterisation technologies towards widespread utilisation in process optimisation and model validation. OYSTER achieves this by sharing metadata in an Open Innovation Environment, where new paradigms of multi-scale contact mechanics are validated on selected application oriented reference materials through continuous interaction with the European Materials Characterisation Council (EMCC). Goldbeck Consulting supports in particular the development of metadata schema and taxonomies as well as standardisation of documentation, following the example of the successful CEN Workshop Agreement on materials modelling terminology, classification and metadata.
