We are pleased to announce that the new CEN Workshop Agreement on Materials characterization – Terminology and structured documentation has been published. This concludes work that Gerhard has been heavily involved with since a revision of the previous version began in May 2024 and is based on insights from the NanoMECommons project.

This new agreement provides a standardised framework, called the CHAracterisation DAta (CHADA) model that can document materials characterization processes in a structured and consistent manner. This framework includes the documentation of materials, samples, workflows, and results. The CHADA model is designed for complex applications and interactions between materials. Through standardisation, we can ensure accurate communication and data sharing between researchers, industry professionals, and other stakeholders in materials science and engineering.

CEN, the European Committee for Standardization, is an association that brings together the national standardization bodies across 34 European countries. It provides a platform for the development of European Standards and other technical documents in relation to various kinds of products, materials, services and processes.

This work is underpinned by the Characterisation Methodology Ontology (CHAMEO) that provides a machine-readable reference for the characterisation terminology and metadata, and a clear structure to the items that are required for documentation of characterisation experiments and the related data processing.

The CEN Workshop Agreement CWA 17815:2025 is available open access from CEN-CENELEC.
